Expectations from Authority

Authority is at the heart of leadership.

When you are authorized or people give you authority they come with expectations.

Primarily three of them:

  • direction,
  • protection, and
  • order

Direction
They expect you to provide direction with the mission and the tasks involved. To set goals and strategies. You are steering the ship and they expect you to know where you want to tale it.

Protection
Those who accept you as the “authority” expect you to protect them, the resources, and all that is in the collective space. They expect you to protect them even while protecting the best interests of the mission.

Order

If you have been authorized for a mission, you are expected to maintain order. To contain chaos and confusion. To maintain structure and processes and to minimize randomness and the accidents that come with that.
